Description

This hearty slow cooker spaghetti sauce is rich, flavorful, and incredibly easy to make. Let your slow cooker do the work while you enjoy a thick, aromatic sauce perfect for pasta nights!

Ingredients

  • 2 cans (28 oz each) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
  • 1 lb ground beef or Italian sausage (optional)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 carrot, grated
  • 1 celery stalk, chopped
  • 2 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/4 cup red wine or 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar (optional)
  • Fresh parsley or basil for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Brown the ground beef or sausage until cooked through. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add chopped onion, garlic, carrot, and celery. Sautรฉ for 3โ€“4 minutes until softened and fragrant.
  3. Transfer the cooked mixture to your slow cooker.
  4. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, herbs, sugar, salt, pepper, and wine or vinegar if using. Stir gently to combine.
  5. Cover and cook on LOW for 6โ€“8 hours or HIGH for 3โ€“5 hours, stirring once or twice during cooking.
  6. For a thicker sauce, remove the lid during the last hour to let excess moisture evaporate.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning before serving. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley.
  8. Serve over pasta, use as a lasagna sauce, or spread over pizza dough.

Notes

This sauce freezes beautifullyโ€”store in airtight containers for up to 3 months. For a vegetarian version, skip the meat and add mushrooms or lentils. Add a pinch of red pepper flakes for a spicy kick.
