Ingredients
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 large egg, room temperature
- 1 tablespoon milk or buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon red food coloring
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350ยฐF and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, beat the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the egg and mix until incorporated.
- Mix in the milk, vanilla extract, and red food coloring until evenly colored.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients and mix just until combined.
- Scoop about 1 1/2 tablespoons of dough per cookie onto the prepared baking sheets.
- Bake for 9 to 11 minutes until edges are set and centers are soft.
- Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth.
- Add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract and beat until light and fluffy.
- Spread or pipe frosting onto completely cooled cookies.
Notes
Do not overbake for the softest texture. Frost cookies only after they are fully cooled to keep the frosting smooth.
