Description

This Ultimate Ground Beef And Potato Casserole is a hearty, cozy, satisfying dish layered with tender potatoes, savory ground beef, creamy gravy, and a golden cheesy topping. Simple ingredients, easy steps, and classic comfort make it perfect for weeknights or family dinners.

Ingredients

  • 6 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 pound (450g) ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons butter or cooking oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme (or 1/2 teaspoon dried)
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon bouillon powder or extra salt
  • 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Peel and thinly slice the potatoes (about 1/8 inch thick) and set aside.
  2. Heat butter or oil in a skillet. Cook onion until soft, then add garlic and thyme.
  3. Add ground beef and cook until browned. Season with paprika, oregano, bouillon, salt, and pepper. Drain excess fat if needed.
  4. Sprinkle flour over the beef mixture and stir to coat.
  5. Slowly pour in beef broth, followed by milk, stirring until a thick gravy forms. Remove from heat.
  6. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch casserole dish.
  7. Layer half the potatoes, then half the beef mixture. Repeat with remaining potatoes and beef.
  8. Cover tightly with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  9. Remove foil, add shredded cheese, and bake 10–15 minutes more until melted and golden.
  10. Let rest a few minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley if desired.

Notes

Slice potatoes evenly for consistent cooking. Ensure the gravy is thick before layering. Let the casserole rest so it sets properly when sliced.
