Description
A cozy, family-friendly French onion beef casserole made with caramelized onions, savory ground beef, tender egg noodles, and a crunchy fried-onion topping.
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 1 oz packet onion soup mix
- 1/2 tsp kosher salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 3 cups beef broth
- 2 cans (10.5 oz each) condensed French onion soup
- 12 oz wide egg noodles
- 6 oz crispy fried onions
Instructions
- Heat butter in a large skillet over medium–high heat. Add sliced onion and caramelize for 25–30 minutes until golden brown and fragrant.
- Add ground beef to the onions. Stir in onion soup mix, salt, and pepper. Cook until beef is browned and no longer pink, then drain excess grease.
- Pour in beef broth and condensed French onion soup. Stir well until combined and simmering.
- Add egg noodles and gently press them into the liquid so they are fully submerged.
- Cover and cook for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until noodles are tender and most liquid is absorbed.
- Remove from heat and top generously with crispy fried onions before serving.
Notes
Caramelize onions well for best flavor. Keep noodles submerged and add fried onions only at the end to retain crispiness.
