Ingredients
- 1½ pounds ground beef
- 4 to 5 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 1 can cream of mushroom soup or cream of chicken soup
- ¾ cup milk
- 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- Paprika or dried parsley for garnish (optional)
- Frozen peas or corn (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F.
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add ground beef and cook 6 to 8 minutes, breaking it apart as it browns.
- Add sliced onion and cook until softened.
- Season with garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
- Drain excess grease and set aside.
- In a bowl, whisk together cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth.
- Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the dish.
- Top with half of the ground beef mixture.
- Pour half of the creamy sauce over the beef.
- Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, beef, and sauce.
- Cover tightly with foil and bake for 60 minutes.
- Remove foil and sprinkle shredded cheese evenly on top.
- Bake uncovered for 10 to 15 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Let rest 10 minutes before serving.
