Description

This chicken sausage broccoli orzo is a simple and satisfying one-pan dinner featuring tender orzo, golden-browned sausage, crisp broccoli, and bright lemon for a comforting yet fresh-tasting meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb chicken sausage, sliced
  • 1 cup orzo pasta (uncooked)
  • 3 cups broccoli florets
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 34 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 ½ cups chicken broth
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • ¼ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • ½ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • Juice of ½1 lemon
  • Fresh parsley, chopped for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced chicken sausage and cook until browned. Remove and set aside.
  2. Add the diced onion to the same skillet and cook for 3–4 minutes. Stir in the garlic, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes until fragrant.
  3. Add the uncooked orzo and toast for 1–2 minutes, stirring to coat.
  4. Pour in the chicken broth, scraping the bottom of the pan. Bring to a simmer, cover, and cook for about 8 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Stir in the broccoli and return the sausage to the skillet. Cover and cook for another 4–5 minutes until broccoli is tender-crisp.
  6. Remove from heat. Stir in Parmesan until creamy, add lemon juice, season with salt and pepper, and garnish with fresh parsley.

Notes

Toast the orzo for better texture, use freshly grated Parmesan, and let the dish rest 5 minutes before serving so it thickens beautifully.
