Description
A quick, savory, and family-friendly appetizer made with just 3 base ingredients: biscuit mix, ground sausage, and cheddar cheese. Ready in under 30 minutes and perfect for brunches, parties, or freezer-friendly snacks.
Ingredients
- The Base Mixture:
- 3 cups biscuit baking mix (e.g., Bisquick)
- 1 pound ground sausage (mild, medium, or spicy)
- 16 oz (4 cups) shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ cup milk (or water)
- Optional Add-Ins:
- ½ tsp garlic powder or onion powder
- ¼ tsp paprika or smoked paprika
- 1–2 tbsp finely chopped green onions
- Freshly cracked black pepper
- Pinch of cayenne (for heat)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Mix ingredients: In a large bowl, combine biscuit mix, ground sausage, shredded cheese, and milk. Use clean hands to thoroughly mix until uniform.
- Add seasonings: Stir in optional garlic powder, paprika, pepper, or other spices if using.
- Shape: Scoop ~2 tablespoons of mixture and roll into balls. Place 1 inch apart on baking sheet.
- Bake for 23–25 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through (internal temp: 160°F for pork, 165°F for poultry).
- Cool 5 minutes before serving. Serve warm with dip.
Notes
- Use freshly shredded cheese — pre-shredded contains anti-caking agents that affect melt and texture.
- Hand-mixing ensures even fat distribution and better binding.
- For leaner meats (turkey/chicken), add 1–2 tbsp extra milk to prevent dryness.
- Freeze baked or unbaked — both work great!
- Serve with ranch, honey mustard, or barbecue sauce.
