Description
This Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is the perfect comfort-food dinner — hearty, simple, nostalgic, and delicious. Seasoned beef patties bake in a rich, creamy mushroom gravy that delivers old-fashioned flavor every time.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds ground beef (lean preferred)
- 1½ cups crushed saltine crackers or plain breadcrumbs
- 1 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon Italian herbs
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Dash of cayenne (optional)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- ½ cup all-purpose flour (for dredging)
- 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup
- 1 cup milk (for gravy)
- Fresh parsley (optional, for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Combine ground beef, crushed saltines, milk, Italian herbs, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, salt, and pepper. Mix gently.
- Shape into 8 patties and dredge each lightly in flour.
- Sear patties in a skillet for 2–3 minutes per side until lightly browned.
- Place patties in baking dish.
- Whisk together cream of mushroom soup and milk, then pour evenly over patties.
- Cover with foil and bake 30 minutes.
- Remove foil and bake an additional 10 minutes until bubbly and creamy.
- Let rest 5 minutes before serving; top with parsley if desired.
Notes
For extra comfort, double the gravy if serving with mashed potatoes. Avoid overmixing the meat to keep patties tender, and allow a few minutes of resting time so the gravy thickens perfectly.
