A cozy, old-fashioned Amish-style baked hamburger steak dish smothered in creamy mushroom gravy—simple ingredients, pure comfort.


Ingredients

  • Ground beef (80/20)
  • Crushed saltine crackers or plain breadcrumbs
  • Milk
  • Italian seasoning
  • Onion powder
  • Garlic powder
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Optional pinch of cayenne pepper
  • All-purpose flour (for dredging)
  • Olive oil or neutral cooking oil
  • Condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • Milk (for gravy)


Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a large baking dish.
  2. In a bowl, mix ground beef, crushed crackers, 1 cup milk, Italian seasoning, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and cayenne.
  3. Shape mixture into thick oval or round patties.
  4. Place flour in a shallow dish and lightly dredge each patty.
  5. Heat oil in a skillet and sear patties 2–3 minutes per side until golden.
  6. Transfer patties to the baking dish.
  7. Whisk condensed cream of mushroom soup with 1 cup milk.
  8. Pour gravy mixture over patties.
  9. Cover with foil and bake 30 minutes.
  10. Remove foil and bake an additional 10 minutes until bubbling.
  11. Let rest 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For best results, avoid overmixing the meat and don’t skip the searing step for added flavor.
